Guillermo Cano:
Con una simpleza mayúscula Ryszard Kapuściński nos dijo: “para ejercer el periodismo, ante todo, hay que ser un buen hombre, o una buena mujer; buenos seres humanos. Las malas personas no pueden ser buenos periodistas. Si se es una buena persona se puede intentar comprender a los demás, sus intenciones, su fe, sus intereses, sus dificultades, sus tragedias”.
No se conocieron, pero podría asegurar que Kapuściński hablaba de Guillermo Cano. Sí. Y de él mismo, no hay duda. Dos periodistas. Dos buenas personas. Dos seres consecuentes.
Hoy traigo la voz de Guillermo Cano, más que mi voz. Temas. Titulares. Posiciones. Y en ellos, rasgos característicos que esbozan su talante.
I
Tema: Derechos humanos. Titular: ¡Qué viene el lobo! Posición: “Jamás saldrá de nuestras plumas una apología del delito, cométalo quien lo cometiere. No lo hemos hecho, no lo haremos. Pero por eso mismo tenemos derecho a negarnos a permanecer indiferentes o silenciosos cuando se escuchan voces, solitarias o a coro, que anuncian que algo grave ha podido o puede estar ocurriendo. Preferimos hacernos presentes de inmediato y cuantas veces sea necesario, aun a riesgo de pecar de ingenuos, si llegan a nosotros advertencias de que por ahí anda suelto en predios colombianos el lobo torturador, aunque el lobo aún no haya cobrado víctimas, o sencillamente esté disfrazado con la piel de oveja. Porque cuando el lobo torturador realmente llega y con él su manada nos puede devorar a todos, por incrédulos, por indiferentes o por cobardes, y entonces ya no habrá nada que hacer”.[i]
Rasgo: Editorializar con firmeza y levantar la voz en defensa de la libertad de pensamiento.

Tema: Justicia y dignidad. Titular: Para que sean colombianos. Posición: “… todo indica que este ( el del padre Ulcué) fue un crimen con ondas raíces en la condición social y económica de la región, sin otro objetivo que el de abatir a un joven sacerdote convertido en vocero de los derechos de sus hermanos de raza e infortunio, los paeces, ancestral y literalmente cazados para despojarlos de sus tierras, las reservas indígenas que desde los inmemoriales tiempos de la Conquista recibieron de la Corona española y que también desde entonces han despertado la codicia, primero de los encomenderos y después de los que, ya sin ese título pero en infame contubernio con el Estado, han pretendido mantenerlos como siervos, negándoles todo derecho, humillándolos y persiguiéndolos para hacerse a sus parcelas, cosechas y ganados. O impidiendo que siembren y cultiven, buscando conformar haciendas amparadas por títulos de viciado origen, contrarios a la historia y a la realidad humana y social”. [ii]
Rasgo: No tolerar la injusticia.

Tema: La paz. Titular: Abnegación no es debilidad. Posición: “Los movimientos subversivos que han suscrito el cese al fuego y la tregua tienen abiertos los senderos de la lucha democrática para tratar de alcanzar los objetivos que ciertamente no lograron conquistar con la sangre, el fuego y la tierra arrasada. Y quienes hemos estado siempre del lado de la apertura democrática y creemos que es con votos y no con balas como se logran los avances perdurables de una nación, tenemos la obligación de demostrar ahora que tenemos mejores razones y somos más capaces de lograr la equidad social y económica que quienes asaltan poblados al despoblado, secuestran, asesinan y extorsionan. Se nos ofrece por primera vez en mucho tiempo la posibilidad de mostrar distintas caras de la democracia. Y mientras más se acerquen a la democracia los alzados en armas, más cercana estará la paz duradera. No la que degollaron, en el símbolo de la paloma, los que siguen declarándole la guerra a este país atormentado. Hay quienes dicen que ya están hartos de que se hable tanto de paz, de tantas discusiones sobre la paz. Olvidan que apenas si estamos saliendo tímidamente de la guerra. Y que la paz es un bien inapreciable que nos hace falta muy hondamente cada vez que perdemos una vida, no importa cuál sea su estamento social. Y a perder vidas, en el campo y en las ciudades, es a lo que nos estábamos acostumbrando, a pesar de indignaciones de un día, que al siguiente se olvidan por el nuevo crimen. Necesitamos la paz para vivir civilizadamente y dejar de morir a destiempo y como salvajes.” [iii]
Rasgo: Apostarle con tenacidad a la convivencia y la democracia, al respeto por el otro y por las ideas diferentes.

Tema: Autoridades. Titular: ¿Estado Policial o Estado de Derecho? Posición: “Pero, ¿hacia dónde vamos?, nos preguntarán los lectores. A evitar, otra vez si es posible, en menos de dos años, que se confunda el deber de la autoridad con el abuso de la autoridad. La sustitución del Estado de Derecho por el Estado Policial. No son defensables, en caso alguno, los excesos ciudadanos, los desmanes juveniles, adolescentes o seniles, el abuso de sus libertades, la subversión o las atrocidades. Los delitos civiles como los militares deben ser prevenidos, reprimidos o castigados. Pero que a nombre de un Estado Policial clandestino e inaceptable se destruya día tras día -nos atrevemos a decir que casi deliberadamente- el Estado de Derecho, nos negamos a aceptarlo”.[iv]
Rasgo: Actitud crítica frente a la responsabilidad de las autoridades y de las instancias de poder.

Tema: Confianza. Titular: Defensa de lo defensable. Posición: “Como periodistas suelen presentársenos serios dilemas sobre si debemos o no comentar ciertos acontecimientos que golpean de momento la opinión pública colombiana; si merece la pena o no la merece hacer precisiones o claridades frente a las tergiversaciones, acomodamientos, amañamientos, manipulaciones de algunos hechos (…) cuando uno dispone de elementos de juicio y de la serenidad suficiente para más bien guardar silencio y dejar que sea el transcurso del tiempo el que decante la verdad. En tal caso me encuentro, por ejemplo, frente a la que durante la semana que acaba de pasar fue la noticia más comentada, más discutida, más desfigurada y hasta más infamemente tratada como la del viaje de Gabriel García Márquez a México, precedida de acontecimientos que se exageraron, que se tergiversaron y que temerariamente se juzgaron sin pleno conocimiento de causa y, mucho menos, sin pleno sentido de justicia, para emitir fallos desde calumniosos hasta ridículos sobre la decisión personal tomada por el escritor genial que le ha dado gloria y fama a las letras colombianas alrededor del mundo. Me sucede que el silencio sobre lo que pienso responsablemente y considero una defensa de lo defensable, no debo ni puedo guardarlo para mi mismo, para mis propias convicciones, sino que debo expresar algunas palabras y fijar algunas opiniones pertinentes para hacer claridad cuando se está tratando, infamemente por muchos medios, de hacer oscuridad sobre lo sucedido”. Rasgo: Fuerza de las convicciones internas. Honradez. Veracidad.

Tema: Corrupción. Titular: Digámonos verdades. Posición: “A este país lo que le está faltando no es plata, metálico, materialismo puro sino profunda reconquista de la moral en el sector público y privado. El narcotráfico nos ha corrompido, el contrabando nos ha corrompido, la compra y venta de influencias nos ha corrompido, la mordida nos ha corrompido, el afán del dinero fácil nos ha corrompido, el alquiler del voto nos ha corrompido. Estamos presenciando el crecimiento de una generación sin fronteras morales, sin valores ni principios”.
Rasgo: Observación rigurosa de la sociedad. Integridad.

Tema: Narcotráfico y política. Título: Maniobras de distracción. Posición: “Por lo más delgado se rompe la cuerda. Los capos de la mafia saben que la penetración hacia el poder político se les va a servir en bandeja de plata en las elecciones de alcaldes. Contra su poder económico no valdrá poder político alguno, sobre todo en las poblaciones pequeñas. Y de ellas irán extendiendo por todo el mapa político administrativo la gran telaraña en la que los colombianos quedaremos enredados y prisioneros. No estamos adivinado un porvenir apocalíptico. Alertamos sobre riesgo cierto que se podría hacer realidad en 1988 si el Estado, la justicia, las fuerzas armadas, los servicios de inteligencia, los partidos políticos, la ciudadanía incontaminada no se preparan con debida anticipación, energía y efectividad, a ganar de verdad la guerra al narcotráfico. Que hasta ahora, lamentablemente, la llevamos perdida.[vii]
Rasgo: Decir con énfasis. Fijar una posición.

Tema: Independencia. Titular: La credibilidad de un periódico. Posición: “A El Espectador se le quiso borrar de la faz de Colombia bajo el procedimiento innoble y bajo de poner en entredicho su credibilidad, labrada en casi cien años de trabajos esforzados por servir a Colombia y a los colombianos con criterio patriótico y con criterio liberal. Se recurrió a todas las armas, casi nunca las legítimas y casi siempre las viles, para afectar su credibilidad cuando ya fue claro, demasiado claro para nuestros detractores, que la tenaza económica que nos aplicaron, con todo el poder casi omnímodo de dinero de que disponían —dinero por lo demás ajeno y sagrado—, para tratar de obligarnos a que calláramos lo que sabíamos y, peor aún, para que dijéramos todo lo contrario de lo que deberíamos decir. (…) Pero como no aceptamos el chantaje ni toleramos las presiones, los promotores del escándalo apelaron entonces a una envenenada campaña para minar la credibilidad de El Espectador. Utilizaron, sin tasa ni medida, sin pausa ni tregua, los noticieros de televisión patrocinados con dineros generosamente repartidos, las páginas de inserciones pagadas en los grandes diarios del país y la abundante redacción de gacetillas a cargo de periodistas fletados para prefabricar preguntas y maquillar respuestas en un aparato publicitario insólito para decirles a los colombianos que El Espectador había perdido toda su credibilidad”.[viii]
Rasgo: Las improntas del periodista. Rectitud, objetividad, análisis de los hechos enmarcado en la verdad y guiado por la honestidad de quien goza de la confianza del lector. Responsabilidad, juicios serios, opinión como reflejo de las propias ideas y del respeto por las de los demás. Vigilancia, denuncia, crítica. Nunca las conveniencias personales o los intereses episódicos por encima de la concepción superior de informar con veracidad y lealtad hacia los ciudadanos.

Con estos rasgos, es decir, firmeza, justicia, respeto, crítica, valor, integridad, énfasis, muestro una imagen posible de Guillermo Cano. La que, resulta evidente, nos acerca al periodista. Pero, no. Lo es también la del tío, la del hermano, la del integrante de familia. La de un buen hombre. La de un buen ser humano.
La mesa que nos reunía fue lugar de conversaciones animadas, de puesta en común de ideas y proyectos; el espacio para compartir sueños e inquietudes, el centro de expresiones diversas y debates, un territorio de estímulo a la imaginación y al pensamiento. También lo fue el periódico que acogió en su sala de redacción y en sus páginas otras conversaciones animadas, que fue casa abierta para las ideas, los proyectos, los sueños, las inquietudes, las expresiones, los debates y las opiniones múltiples, contrarias y diversas; en fin, un territorio fértil para las ideas y la creación.
Reconozco en los dos espacios vitales de ese hombre bueno otras señales compartidas: respeto, honestidad, transparencia, juego limpio, claridad, compromiso, serenidad, decisión, responsabilidad.
Guillermo Cano fue consecuente: sus ideas, sus escritos y su vida cotidiana guardaron siempre una misma línea de conducta.
Termino con dos rasgos trazados por él mismo, en una valiosa entrevista de Sara Bozzi para el libro Los Decanos, editado hace 20 años por la Biblioteca Pública Piloto de Medellín.
Pregunta: ¿Cuál es la principal cualidad para dirigir un periódico? Respuesta: “Saber escuchar”.
Pregunta: ¿Cuál es el principal aporte de El Espectador al periodismo colombiano? Respuesta: su carácter y su independencia.
